The M3 Purpose
In competitive sailing and windsurfing, getting a good start is vital and is about being in the right place at the right time. The Suunto M3 watch helps ensure that is exactly where you are. To get you to the right place on the start line at the right time, the M3 not only helps you to determine the favoured end of the start line but also displays the time to the start line in connection with the start timer to help you cross the line at just the right moment.
Loud signals and large numbers together with a race timer for easy synchronisation with the race committee mean you'll have the edge when it's time for the off.
Better Feedback
Before the race, you can make practice starts to estimate the time to the start line from a chosen position. Then, if the alert signal is to be given 5 minutes before the start, set the countdown timer to 5 minutes and start it at the official signal. This way, you'll know exactly when to set off from your chosen position in order to cross the start line right on time. Once the timer is synchronised, you can lock the synchro to prevent any mistake.
The Suunto M3 also helps you determine the most advantageous end of the start line so that you're not just there at the right time, but at the right place too. Using the boat's compass and the M3's rotating bezel, it is a simple, quick matter to decide which end of the line to head for.
Accurate Data
Once out on the course, the M3 continues to provide assistance by allowing you to calculate the bearing to the next race marker before you reach the turning point and compare it to the wind direction. Thus, you can steer the correct course as early as possible, giving you a valuable advantage over your competitors.
You can also mark the wind direction with the rotating bezel to track wind shifts, monitor the race time and add time stamps (interval times). After the race, you can check the Suunto M3's logbook to review the race times and time stamps.
